Yes, indeedy - here it is! The home of the Ashford wheels and looms. I was not able to spend a lot of time here, so I missed the museum entirely! I did manage to spend a few dollars (heh heh) in the Ashford Gift Shop, but since I already have a couple of Ashford wheels, there wasn't much I really needed. I bought a couple of skeins of merino lace weight yarn and a lace scarf pattern, and a pattern for Frankie the sheep. I will have to post pictures of Frankie once I get him made - such a clever idea! I had a wonderful lunch of "crumbled hoki" here in Ashburton. For those of you wondering - that is fried breaded fish. <G> It was good and their tartar sauce is quite different from the usual US fare. I even got a few ice cubes in my drink - talk about a treat. I sat at a table outside in the sun until the top of my head started burning and I had to move to a table in the shade. I was in tank top and shorts and everyone else was bundled up in coats and long trousers. The weather here has been wonderful - not one hot day and no cold rainy ones, either. One of the things I noticed right off about NZ is the way that pedestrians walk fearlessly out into traffic. I watched in amazement as one after another survived this suicidal behavior. Then I tried it myself - amazing! All the cars stopped as I approached the crosswalks! Apparently the pedestrian has the right of way in NZ and it is enforced. (I was told that no one speeds in NZ either, but I'm pretty sure that is not true - I was passed several times while doing the legal limit) Familiar sights around Ashburton: Kentucky Fried Chicken, McDonald's. |
