On Saturday Joy drives me to Melbourne for a quick tour. Crossing the
Westgate bridge over the Yarra River, I get my first view of the Melbourne
skyline. Right at the bottom of the bridge we pass the historic Docklands
buildings which have been converted to apartments. Across the street is a
modernistic sculpture of a bird. We were not close enough to see the
plaque and could not guess the significance of the piece. As we drove thru
town, I caught a few shots of modern skyscrapers and wonderful older brick
buildings. The 2nd from the right photo in the 2nd row is the Flemington
Racecourse Hotel, just in front of the home of the world famous Melbourne Cup
Race. The next photo shows the toll road from the Tullamarine Airport into
the city in front of the 20story high public housing estate. Joy tells me
that some of the flats are 3 bedrooms and as large as some houses in other parts
of the city. The first photo, 3rd row, is the Melbourne City Baths, a
hundred year tradition. The next few shots are of the Melbourne
General Cemetery (commonly known as the dead center of Melbourne). The
last photo on this page shows some lovely terrace houses, so called because they
share a common wall and roof.
