Melbourne is the capital of Victoria and its largest city. A river runs thru it and it sits by the sea. The skyline suggests a thoroughly modern city, but heritage buildings are cherished and protected. It's common practice to preserve the front wall of the old buildings and build new structures behind. My first impression of the city was that it was extraordinarily clean compared to US cities I've seen. All the public toilets I've seen in Australia have been clean and fresh smelling. Airports and rail stations are clean and there are no homeless persons living in them. People toss their rubbish in bins as a matter of course. Cleaners, even in small towns, make $17+ per hour. (Which is about $2 per hour more than I make in accounting!) |
