Wellington! After a perfect crossing of Cook Straight on Easter Sunday,
I was met at the ferry by Mary Knox and taken to her home outside of town. I
spent several wonderful days with Mary and Fred and I have to say she ran me
ragged. Whew!! Mary drove me around Wellington till I was dizzy -
the city sits on what seems like a dozen different bays (but I think it may be
only 3 or 4) and perches on the hills above the ocean giving spectacular views.
Wellington was the capital city of NZ and has a population of over 1 million.
This is the largest city I've been in so far.
Mary had planned to take me to Te Papa (the museum) and see The Lord of the
Rings exhibit, but it's in its final days and the lines wind outside the doors
and around the corner. We see the rest of the museum and the gift shops
where I'm easily able to not buy anything. Whew - expensive! We run
into Mary's daughter and grandchild and it is a pleasant day. We follow
that by dinner out and I sample my first NZ beer. Good. :)
The weather turns a bit chilly and drizzly on the day Mary takes me shopping,
so I buy some fluffy sheepskin slippers. These are far too warm to wear
here at home, but I will treasure them anyway. I also buy some more
lanolin hand cream and a possum leather golf glove for my friend's husband back
home. He was duly impressed, but it's too warm to wear the glove here in
Fresno, so he takes it out of his pocket, shows it around and puts it back into
his pocket.
