Gates of Haast Bridge - notice there is only one lane across this bridge. The sign in the forground tells us we do not have the right of way. |

My drive from Cromwell up the West Coast to the Nelson Lakes area was full of
adventure and wild scenery. Here is my first view of the Tasman Sea from
the west coast of New Zealand. The most striking difference between
Eastern NZ and the West Coast is the vegetation. In the east, there is a
thin layer of soil over the rocks of the island and plants have to struggle for
a toehold. Also the interior mountains trap all the rain on the western
slopes. Consequently the land in the west is crowded with rain forest and
lush growth with not a bare spot to be seen. As you can see, forests grow right
down to the sea.
